The Introduction from the book
This book has been created to cater for the Australian gardener who may own a Clivia and seeks information on how to care for their plant, or the novice enthusiast who has acquired a few plants and seeks clarification they are caring for the plants adequately, or perhaps the non-gardener who has received a Clivia as a gift and has no idea what to do with it. This book is not intended for the experienced Clivia grower or the qualified horticulturist.
Currently, a gardener seeking information on the cultivation of Clivia in Australia will not find what they seek in a bookshop. The only Clivia cultivation books I am aware of, although fabulous books, are huge volumes containing complex and scientific information, with high-quality photographs, based in countries other than Australia, and are very expensive, if available at all. Search on Amazon and you will find a number of books published on Clivia using artificial intelligence (AI) with strange and generic information that applies to any plant in the garden but has the word ‘Clivia‘ dropped in to portray the appearance of a Clivia book.
The gardener seeking information may have limited success searching the Internet with snippets of information on Clivia cultivation from various websites, often with conflicting information from outdated or international sources, or they may locate the Clivia groups on Facebook if they are on social media. There are three Clivia clubs in Australia (contact information at back of this book) which may suit the Clivia enthusiast more so than the gardener wanting basic information.
Everyone has a different opinion on how to care for a Clivia, and although this is a normal fact of life in any area of expertise, for a gardener seeking information, it can be confusing. Expert 1 will spruike the benefits of using their method while Expert 2 will predict a dire outcome for anyone participating in Expert 1’s method.
Australia is a large country with different climates and what works with Clivia in Melbourne may not be successful in southern Queensland. What may work in a shaded garden full of rich, well drained soil may not work in sunny clay-based gardens.
In this book, I will keep information simple to read and easy to implement. I outline my own method of cultivation but also list what other growers are doing. One of these methods may suit your situation and environment. For the record, I foster the eco-friendly method of cultivation, where possible, along with the KISS principle. The information in this book pertains to Australia, our products and our climate.
